Baja Wines with Keith Mabry and Tom Bracamontes
We’re enchanted with Baja California—the coastal towns; the roadside fish tacos; the cutting-edge culinary scene; the landscape that mixes avant garde architecture with casitas and dirt roads; and, as of late, the wine. Though the Baja Californianos are the heirs to a long, historic vinous tradition, the last few years have seen an explosion in quality and enthusiasm—not to mention more international attention. It’s still a lawless Wild West in the sense that there are no winemaking restrictions—go ahead! Blend Nebbiolo and Chenin Blanc if you’re so inclined! But with some exceptionally talented and passionate producers, the wines are better now than they’ve ever been, and there’s nowhere to go but up. Join Buyer Keith Mabry and Importer Tom Bracamontes for a chat about where Baja wine has been and where it’s going, plus profiles on a few of their favorite producers.
