Casa Castillo’s Vibrant Spanish Red Is Perfect for the Thanksgiving Table

It is hard to think about Spanish wines without thinking about food. I have enjoyed many a glass of red Spanish wine by itself, but it is always more enjoyable at the dinner table or at least with something to nibble on. I know that for many people the first thing that they think of with wine from Spain is oak, and, to that, I have to say, thank you for thinking about Spanish wines, but that is not always the case.

In the world of Spanish wine there is a quiet revolution occurring, not unlike what is happening in some parts of France and the U.S. Winemakers young and old are challenging their regional traditions and making lighter, fresher wines than their parents or grandparents did.

Casa Castillo is one of those producers, and if you are familiar with their wines, you might be thinking, those will be great with Thanksgiving—if you are barbecuing your turkey! And historically you would be correct, but recently they have changed their entire philosophy and approach. They farm organically and sustainably; they have reduced the amount of new oak use; and they have changed their style from rich and bold to vibrant and intense. I hate to describe their wines as Burgundian, but that is a more apt comparison than a Bandol Rouge, which is made from the same varietal.

The 2020 Casa Castillo "La Tendida" Jumilla $21.99 is a perfect holiday red wine. The aromatics are lifted and bright wine and charmingly fruit forward. I can just imagine these aromatics intermingling with a wide and diverse set of dishes on a holiday table. This wine shines on the palate. It is medium bodied with supple tannins, and with fresh acidity. It is lively, aromatic, and easy like a Pinot, the default holiday wine, but there is more substance here, think bold Châteauneuf-du-Pape without the edges that Syrah can bring. This is a wine that can engage with and be enjoyed by just about all red wine drinkers. ¡Salud!
