Ata Rangi
The Martinborough pioneer: Pinot Noir of reference standard since Clive Paton planted the first vines in 1980, and a Sauvignon Blanc with real texture.
Ata Rangi is one of the founding estates of Martinborough, at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island, where Clive Paton planted his first Pinot Noir on a stony old riverbed in 1980. The estate's Pinot Noir has been the benchmark of the region ever since; the single-vineyard McCrone and the Masters bottlings sit above it, and Crimson is the younger-vines wine for drinking soon.
The Sauvignon Blanc is made for the table rather than the fashion: a glorious medley of passionfruit, persimmon, pear and honeysuckle, with a portion fermented in older barrels for weight through the middle.
