Donvitantonio
Montepulciano, Pecorino and a rosato from Abruzzo — full-bodied, savoury reds with fine-grained tannin, and the whites and pinks of the Adriatic coast, all at everyday prices.
Donvitantonio is an Abruzzo estate working with the region's classic trio: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo for the reds, Pecorino for the whites, and Cerasuolo-style rosato from the same Montepulciano grape, pressed pale. The reds are the house's calling card — a full-bodied, savoury Montepulciano with roasted-mushroom and dried-herb undertones to the black fruit, and firm but fine-grained tannins that James Suckling rated 90 points.
Pecorino is Abruzzo's answer to the question of a serious white: a native grape, nearly lost, that gives saline, herbal, structured wines. The rosato is the summer one. All three sit under fifteen dollars, which is the point of importing them ourselves.
