A property in the southern corner of the Montalcino region called Pietranera, La Velona is another traditional Tuscan producer that uses hey also large oak botte to make more rustic and classic Brunello wines. Although the property is located in the deep south, the vineyards have an eastward tilt so the grapes never get overly ripe. The soils are a mix of various types, rather than the deep, rich, red soil typically found in that area, known as terra rossa. Terra rossa normally produces wine with sweet rich flavors, but La Velona produces an earthier, gamier style that still has the wild cherry flavor with more depth.
