2008 Cristal: The Best of the Best for Mom

This Mother’s Day, if you feel like a splurge, we have something incredible in stock for you: a wine that comes from the best vintage of my 25-year career buying Champagne at K&L, and one of the very top wines from that vintage. I am talking about the 2008 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne (direct from Roederer 2025) $449.99. This wine has absolutely perfect provenance, coming direct from Roederer, through their own wholly owned import company, MMD. With multiple 100 and 99 point scores from the press, I am not alone in liking it—it is simply as good as Champagne gets.

The wine is composed of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, all from an estate within an estate owned by Roederer. They use their oldest vines from their chalkiest parcels to make Cristal, and almost all massal selections for the plant material instead of clones. This vintage was released after the 2009 and was given over a decade on the lees before disgorgement. The 2008 harvest was blessed by a cold east wind, and sunny but fresh conditions that allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness while maintaining very bright acidity. This was only the second time in history this east wind made its magic—the first was in 1996, and we haven’t seen it happen again.

Now hitting its stride at 17 years old, this wine has a gorgeous white gold color, and a bouquet of staggering complexity, with everything from fine baguette toast to spring flowers to roasted nuts to citric focus. In the mouth, it has arrived, with perfect texture, tiny bubbles, and an effortless facile à boire style that defies the layers of flavors on offer. The finish is fine and detailed, a true peacock’s tail of expansive complexity. What a treat!
