Sauv Blanc Season Is Here. These Six Bottles Deliver.
K&L Domestic Wine Buyer Ryan Woodhouse shares his top California Sauvignon Blanc picks for summer 2025, covering styles from crisp stainless-steel expressions to rich barrel-fermented old-vine bottlings.
Nothing says summer sipper to me like Sauvignon Blanc (well, maybe rosé—but my colleague Aaron has that covered in this newsletter!). For me, few varietals can even come close to delivering that punchy, aromatic burst of refreshment. The best SBs can be tropical and citrusy, herbaceous and mineral all at the same time. I love Sauv Blanc and would probably make it my desert island grape variety if forced. It's a grape that is just so versatile and downright quaffable, but also, when made in a particular way, can also age gracefully and take on a whole extra dimension. We have a broad selection of domestic Sauvignon Blanc at the moment (111 at last check), so I'm going to list off a handful of bottles that will surely be passing through my refrigerator this summer season.
2023 Quivira Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc $14.95 Quivira Winery, based in Dry Creek Valley, excels with Sauv Blanc. Their wines have become total staples for me that deliver dependable deliciousness year after year. A vibrant, crisp, mostly stainless-steel aged style with mouthwatering acidity and classic varietal characters of juicy citrus fruit, hints of river stone, cut herbs, white blossom and lemon oil. We have very sharp pricing on this wine making it one of best day to day values on the shelf.
2024 Ghost Block "Estate - Morgaen Lee Vineyard" Yountville Sauvignon Blanc $24.95 A sleeper of a wine that over delivers on price point year in year out. Coming from an CCOF certified organically farmed estate vineyard just north of the town of Yountville. The vines here date back to 1978, their roots delving deep into gravelly soils underpinning all the lush fruit with piercing mineral tones and extra depth of flavor. This pristine old-vine fruit is whole-cluster pressed, fermented in neutral French oak, and aged on lees for 7 months. This is seriously good wine that sometimes flies under the radar but deserves a place on the table with the very best wines of the region.
2025 Massican California Sauvignon Blanc $24.95 The latest release from Massican lives up to the hype and long reputation of producing world-class aromatic whites. Inspired by the floral, bright, gastronomic wines of Fruili, winemaker Dan Petroski sources the best Sauv Blanc he can get his hands on from far and wide and masterfully blends them into this consistently exceptional bottle. Always one of our top selling Sauv Blancs and always sold out before the next release is ready to go. The 25 has brilliant energy and tension on the palate that begs for food.
2025 Farella "Estate" Coombsville Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc $29.95 Another new release from a perennial favorite. Farella Estate was the founding winery of the Coombsville AVA in the very southern part of Napa Valley. Although this region is most famed for its powerful, structured, inky Cabernets, Farella has always maintained that Sauvignon Blanc is also a perfect fit for this terroir. Most off the upper estate, with rockier soils filled with basalt and compressed volcanic ash, is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. As the slope flattens out and the soils are more defined by silt and fine gravels, the Sauvignon Blanc thrives. The freshness and clarity here is stunning. All done in stainless steel with a focus on preserving the crystalline purity of fruit. Due to meticulously farming, limited irrigation and low yields, the wine never lacks texture and concentration even in the absence of oak. A beautiful wine, and a stunning value given the AVA and pedigree.
2023 DIRT "Mariah Estate Vineyard" Mendocino Ridge Sauvignon Blanc $24.95 94WE 94JD Moving from a quartet of old favorites to a brand-new wine that I had never heard of until just a few weeks ago when I had the pleasure of tasting DIRT's wines with proprietor Michael Frey. Michael's wife Nicole and her family own Mariah Vineyard in the Mendocino Ridge AVA. This spectacular vineyard site sits at 2,400ft elevation on the Mendocino Coast. The vineyard is farmed with holistic organic and regenerative protocols, and zero synthetic inputs. The winemaking is minimalist but precise, resulting in vibrant, concentrated, flavorful wines. All wines are also independently lab tested to be free from 500 different toxins and contaminates commonly found in wines. DIRT is all in on having CLEAN wines! A very exciting new find for me. Check out their excellent Pinot Noir also!
2023 Krutz Family Cellars "Beckstoffer Melrose Vineyard" Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc $29.95 (Elsewhere $60) 95JD This wine really turns up the volume of what you can do with Sauvignon Blanc. Coming from old vines at Beckstoffer's Melrose Vineyard in the heart of Rutherford, this powerful, weighty Sauv Blanc is entirely fermented in French oak, 70% new. The sappy concentration of the fruit absorbs the oak very well and the wine is balanced and well proportioned. Passion fruit, candied lemon, lots of floral notes and barrel spice. Broad on the palate but maintaining ample acidity and freshness. Totally delicious right now for all its fruit intensity and dialed up richness, but I think this will also make a very interesting bottle with 2-4 years of bottle age. We made a serious deal here and have 50% off the regular retail price!
