Tenuta delle Terre Nere: The “Burgundy” of Sicily

When Marco de Grazia first arrived on the north slope of Mount Etna in the early 2000s, he wasn't just looking to make wine, he was looking to prove a point. As a long-time exporter who had spent decades tasting the finest Burgundies and Barolos, Marco saw something in the "black lands" of the volcano that others had overlooked: a map of individual Contrade (crus) that could produce wines of world-class elegance.

He was the pioneer who essentially mapped the north slope, treating Nerello Mascalese and Carricante with the same reverence a Burgundian winemaker treats Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Today, Tenuta delle Terre Nere stands as the benchmark for the region, reflecting a professional dedication to regional guides and curated collections. These are wines of extreme tension, high-altitude energy, and a profound sense of place.

To understand Terre Nere, you have to understand the North Slope. While the east and south sides of the volcano are often lusher, the north slope is a place of extremes. The vineyards sit on a foundation of ancient lava flows (sciare) and volcanic ash. Depending on whether a flow happened 100 years ago or 10,000 years ago, the soil composition changes from solid basalt to fine, powdery dust. At altitudes reaching up to 1,000 meters, the day-to-night temperature shifts are massive. Even in the height of summer, the nights are cold. This preserves the "nervous" acidity and floral aromatics that make Etna wines so distinctive.

The Whites: The 2024 "Le Vigne Niche" Series

Marco recognized that Carricante, the king of Etna whites, could reflect terroir just as clearly as the reds. He created the "Le Vigne Niche" (the small niches) series to showcase single-vineyard whites, a move that changed the perception of Sicilian white wine forever. The 2024 whites are crystalline and vertical. These are wines of "liquid rock."

2024 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Bianco $29.99 94JS The classic introduction. Mostly Carricante with a touch of Catarratto, Grecanico, and Minnella. It’s bright, salty, and perfect for seafood.

2024 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Le Vigne Niche - Montalto” Etna Bianco $54.99 94WS From vines on the southern slope (higher up, cooler). This is vertical and precise, with a piercing citrus nerve.

2024 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Le Vigne Niche-Santo Spirito” Etna Bianco $59.99 93WS Sourced from a site with deep volcanic ash soil. This is the most floral and "finesse-driven" of the whites—think white peach and crushed jasmine.

2024 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Le Vigne Niche-Calderara Sottana” Etna Bianco $59.99 95WS From the rockiest site. This is powerful, structured, and profoundly smoky. It is the most "Meursault-like" in its density.

2024 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Le Vigne Niche- Salice” Etna Bianco Superiore $59.99 A rare expression from the Milo zone (east slope). Because it is a "Superiore," it must be 80% Carricante. It is incredibly sapid, with a vibrating saline finish.

The Reds: The Crus of the North Slope

The 2023 and 2022 reds showcase the evolution of the "Etna Grand Cru" concept.

2024 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso $32.99 The benchmark for the region. It offers the ethereal transparency of Pinot Noir with the volcanic grip of Nerello Mascalese.

2023 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Santo Spirito“ Etna Rosso $59.99 95JS 94VN From the lower terraces of the Contrada. This is the "charmer"—deeply aromatic, with notes of wild strawberry, black tea, and rose petal.

2023 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Guardiola” Etna Rosso $79.99 97JS 96VN Sourced from one of the highest red vineyards on the mountain (up to 900 meters). This wine is lean, iron-rich, and incredibly structural. It is a wine of "tension."

2022 Tenuta delle Terre Nere “Anniversario - Calerara Sottana” Etna Rosso $44.99 96KO 94JS 94WA 94VN A special bottling celebrating the winery's legacy in their most iconic Contrada. Calderara Sottana is famous for its large black stones (ellittici) that retain heat. The 2022 is broad, powerful, and built for long-term aging.

The Icon: Prephylloxera

2023 Tenuta delle Terre Nere 'Prephylloxera'' Etna Rosso $189.99 97VN 96JS This is the soul of the estate. Sourced from two tiny parcels in Calderara Sottana, these vines are over 140 years old and remain on their own roots (un-grafted).

There is a "silence" to this wine that is hard to describe. The 2023 is remarkably concentrated but feels weightless on the palate. It offers layers of dried orange peel, incense, and crushed volcanic rock. It is a living piece of history and arguably the greatest red wine made in Sicily today.
