Last summer, Ralph Sands, K&L Bordeaux specialist, checked an item off his bucket list with an in-depth visit to famed Calera winery, located on Mt. Harlan in San Benito County. We are ecstatic at K&L to be able to offer a library of 40+ years of vintages in an acquisition of a lifetime. Now is a perfect time to line your cellar with these incomparable testaments to California vinous history.
Read MoreThe relationship between Calera and K&L is long and deep. In 1975 when the late Josh Jensen planted his first vines in the rugged limestone soils of Mt. Harlan, the idea of K&L was also taking root in the minds of our founders Clyde Beffa and Todd Zucker… Fast forward to March of 2022 when I was told that K&L was going to be offered access to these library wines—an opportunity that I was obviously never going to pass up! However, the sheer scale of the library didn’t hit home until I was in possession of a somewhat overwhelming spreadsheet of wines going back five decades!
Read MoreWe at K&L are fastidious about our website and have a stable of editors who make it their mission to check every comma and critic review that goes up. In today’s Meet the Staff blog, we meet one of our fearless Grammar Crusaders, Chris Puppione! Chris and I actually started at K&L at the same time, back in early 2015, so he’s just celebrated his seventh anniversary with the company. Since then he’s had his hands full, starting both a family and a family winery! I wanted to know what it was like to be on the production side of things after so many years in retail, so I peppered him with questions.

Read MoreOne of my favorite things about the wine industry is the people in it. Our staff members are no exception. They’re a fascinating lot, and each has meandered one way or another through interesting experiences until they’ve gotten to us. So here goes our new series: Meet the Staff, in which we’ll ask them about their journeys and take you along for the ride. First up, Ryan Woodhouse, Domestic Buyer Extraordinaire.
Read MoreThe Brochet family has 32 acres of vines, almost all in the village of Écueil on the Mountain of Reims. They have been growers since 1882, at least, and have the distinction of possessing their own special selection of Pinot Noir, Pinot d’Écueil, which is an old massal selection passed down for generations in their family. Louis Brochet, the current winemaker, is qualified with a diploma of enology, a masters-level education in winemaking. With his learned skill, their special selection of Pinot, and the great terroir of the 1er cru of Écueil, the family is turning out fantastic wines. Since we have been buying direct from them for years, the prices are still super reasonable.
