K&L Bordeaux Buyer, CRO
"Our Discovery Series has arrived! At the heart of this program is a mission to showcase wines of impeccable quality, unmistakable regional typicité, and exceptional value. As I often say, we’re not simply putting a label on someone’s latest release—we’re curating standout selections from our deep and trusted network of producers. Each wine must distinguish itself from its peers, often outperforming bottles that sell for many times the price. Only those that meet this high bar earn a place in the lineup. From one of the most treasured terroirs in the world of fine wine, it’s nothing short of a coup to bottle an exclusive Pomerol of this caliber and deliver it for under $25. This is land where bottles typically fetch $100 to $3,000, simply because production is so limited and quality so high. The plateau of Pomerol is defined by its unique gravel and iron-rich clay soils, which yield wines of remarkable complexity, richness, texture, luxury, and longevity. I was captivated by this particular selection for its quintessential Pomerol character: gorgeous red fruits, striking density, and a textured palate that reflects the famed mosaic of soils beneath the vines. It is a wine that could come from nowhere else. We’ll count ourselves fortunate if we can continue to collaborate on future vintages. This is a delicious, complex, and thoroughly enjoyable Pomerol that easily merits double the price, and one that will be a standout on our shelves while it’s in stock."
Unlike other major Bordeaux appellations, Pomerol has no official classification system. Instead, its reputation is built entirely on the quality of its unique terroir. The region is a small, relatively flat plateau, but its soils are a complex mosaic that is the secret to its success.
The most revered vineyards sit on a plateau of deep clay and gravel. At the heart of this plateau lies a unique deposit of iron-rich blue clay, known as "crasse de fer." This special soil is credited with giving the wines of Pomerol their incredible depth, power, and signature truffle and mineral notes.
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as excellent, marked by a perfect balance of richness, structure, and freshness. A hot, dry summer stressed the vines just enough to concentrate flavors, while timely rains in late summer allowed the grapes to reach full maturity without being overripe.
In Pomerol, the vintage was particularly successful for Merlot, producing wines with incredible aromatic purity, silky tannins, and a beautiful balance of generous fruit and vibrant acidity. The wines are approachable now but have the structure to age gracefully.
The magic of the Right Bank Bordeaux lies in the art of the blend. Each grape variety plays a crucial role. Merlot forms the backbone, providing structure, blackcurrant notes, and tannins for aging.
Merlot brings softness and fleshy plum flavors. Small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot can be added for aromatic complexity and spice, creating a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The Gironde estuary divides Bordeaux into two distinct regions, the Left Bank and the Right Bank, each with its own unique terroir and winemaking philosophy that defines the style of its wines.
This Pomerol 2019 is just one chapter in our Discovery Series. Each bottle is a story—a place, a person, and a flavor we believe in. Explore the full series, or dive deeper into the world of Bordeaux.
