Produttori del Barbaresco: A Collective Force for Good in Piedmont
The name of this place represents something exceptional: it means unity in an area where history, heritage, and prestige often define names. The Produttori del Barbaresco facility has existed since 1958, and it represents the living force of its entire community. A genuine co-operative emerged from necessity while sharing core principles, and it ended up becoming famous for creating top Nebbiolo wines from Piemonte.
Risk was the first element to emerge during this period. Barbaresco grape producers faced economic survival difficulties after World War II because their grape sales did not generate enough revenue. The lack of Barbaresco DOCG at that time compelled vineyards to sell their grapes to Barolo houses at very low prices. The parish priest Don Fiorino Marengo united 19 growers under the Produttori del Barbaresco name through his persuasion. The primary objective was to protect what they had instead of seeking financial gain: their land, their tradition, their identity.
More than 50 families from the village and 100 hectares of first-rate Barbaresco vineyards form the present-day Produttori organization. The organization functions as a democratic system that maintains absolute principles. The DOCG Barbaresco territory limits their fruit origin to member-owned vineyard plots and they produce Riserva wines from nine single-Cru selections during exceptional vintages.
2020 Riserva Cru Release
The Barbaresco vintage of 2020 was one of elegance and lift. It presented perfect equilibrium to winemakers. A summer heatwave moderated by nightly coolness produced wines that with aroma definition, smooth tannins, and precise structure throughout the entire collection. The 2020 vintage demonstrates refinement that stands in contrast to the structured muscular wines found in the 2019 vintage. The Riservas show immediate character yet demonstrate potential for long-term development.
All winemaking processes at the facility remain traditional: the wines age in large Slavonian botti for 30 months before spending an additional year in bottles before release. The unique qualities of each bottle stem from its soil composition, terrain orientation, and prevailing winds. These wines beautifully showcase Barbaresco’s natural patchwork of micro-terroirs.
