The Brilliant 2022 Vintage from Burgundy’s Domaine Parent
I always look forward to my annual visit to Domaine Parent and my sit-down tasting with Anne Parent. We tasted her 2022 wines from bottle, and they were absolutely singing! 2022 was an exceptional vintage for red Burgundy, and the set of wines from Domaine Parent showcase both the quality of the vintage as well as the signature style of Domaine Parent. With premier holdings scattered mostly across Pommard, Corton, and Beaune, Domaine Parent has created wines of incredible freshness with enviable fruit and impressive structure and depth. Domaine Parent exemplifies the perfect synergy of Burgundian classicism with the new world order in Burgundy.
A great test of any domaine’s quality and craftmanship is their Bourgogne entry-level wines, and I can attest that the two Bourgogne Rouges are outstanding. The 2022 Domaine Parent Bourgogne Côte d’or Rouge $39.99 is a brilliantly structured red wine that oozes fresh black and red fruits with supple tannins and subtle hints of spice and earth. The 2022 Domaine Parent Bourgogne Côte d'Or Rouge "Sélection Pomone" $49.99 93DC shows more depth and power with a “baby Pommard” feel of dark purple fruit and spice that flares out across the palate. This is an outstanding Bourgogne Rouge and drinks like a fine red Burgundy that could easilt be double the cost.
In Burgundy, it is always a challenge to find the next emerging region where the quality is ahead of the cost; two of those holy grail regions happen to be areas Domaine Parent farms: Ladoix and Monthelie. Ladoix lies a stone’s throw away from the famed Hill of Corton and Monthelie lies nestled between the villages of Volnay, Auxey-Duresses, and Meursault. Much like the rise of St-Aubin thanks to its proximity to Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Meursault, the villages of Ladoix and Monthelie are rising stars. The 2022 Domaine Parent Ladoix 1er Cru "La Corvée" $59.99 94DC is a killer wine with super supple black and purple fruit flavors with hints of cola and spice and just a touch of crushed stone and spice. This is a stellar 1er Cru red Burgundy that is drinking wonderfully right now but will also age gracefully over the next 5-15 years. The 2022 Domaine Parent Monthelie Rouge 1er Cru "Les Champs Fuillots" $59.99 92DC is an elegantly structured red that showcases pure red fruits, subtle spice notes and just a touch of stone and earth. Fine and delineated this pure, fresh, and bright offering is a beauty in the glass and drinking great from the first moment it hits your palate.
A trio of tremendous Pommard’s awaits you from Domaine Parent in 2022, and we start off with the 2022 Domaine Parent Pommard “La Croix Blanche” $79.99 92DC, a great village-level Pommard that is loaded with fresh, ripe fruit and that mineral along with that graphite note we associate with classic Pommard. A step up brings us to the 2022 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru “Les Chaponnieres” $129.99 97DC, which stuns from the first aroma coming form the glass to the last note on the finish. This is a stunning wine that showcases what makes Pommard so seductive with luscious black and purple fruits and graphite notes. This supple, smooth offering is sure to turn heads! The most renowned of all the vineyard sites in Pommard is “Les Epenots,” and the 2022 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru “Les Epenots” $139.99 96DC does not disappoint. It is regal in all ways with perfectly delineated fruit, incredible spice and earth notes with tannins that seamlessly roll into a long, caressing finish. This is a stunner of a Pommard and truly does justice to the “Les Epenots” vineyard site.
Not content making incredible Pommards, the Parent family also fashions fantastic wines from the famed Hill of Corton. The sole white wine that we carry is the 2022 Domaine Parent Corton Blanc Grand Cru $199.99 95DC 92-94VN 90-93BH, which deftly conveys the tight-rope balancing act all great Corton Blanc do—it is simultaneously powerful and complex while also feeling elegant and refined. The fruit here is so pure with orchard fruits and viscous mouthfeel combing with wonderful acidity and refinement with a finish worthy of a Grand Cru. Last but not least we have the 2022 Domaine Parent Corton Grand Cru “Les Renardes” $179.99 98DC 91-94BH 91-93VN is a regal red that showcases fine red and black fruits with spice notes that unfolds to reveal an incredibly complex and layered palate that gives way to a smooth, fresh finish. A hallmark of the Parent wines is their freshness and it was totally on display here with their set of amazing 2022s!
