Organic, Crushable, 97 Points, and Under $20: The 2020 Ayles Cuesta del Herrero

What if I told you that you can buy an absolutely crushable organic red blend—that earned 97 points and Best in Show for 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards—for under $20? Allow me to present the 2020 Ayles "Cuesta del Herrero" Tinto Vino de Pago Aragon. I had no idea of its critical acclaim—it was just a random sample bottle left behind after a K&L staff tasting.

In the glass the wine presents a mysteriously deep, dark ruby color. The first few swirls release a sensory kaleidoscope—fresh, clean, and vibrant. The “bio” designation and cute donkey on the label gave me the impression that it would be a little funky, so my initial error in judgement came as a pleasant surprise. Then came heady aromas of sweet, sticky dried plum, dried morello cherries, violet hard candies, warm baking spices, and dusty earth. Whoa! What IS this?!?!

The palate confidently presents itself with vibrant clarity—sweet, dark fruit—soft, sticky dried plums, dark cherries, nutmeg, caramel, dried lavender, and a touch of India ink. It’s dry and inviting with soft, approachable tannins and food-friendly acidity. This is exactly the type of wine I yearn for at the end of the day with light snacks or just in a glass while watching a movie or reading a book. It would also be perfect for sharing with a good friend while having a chat.

Humble yet gorgeous wines like this are what moves the hearts of many an oenophile, myself included. After I finished writing my tasting notes, I launched out of my seat to buy a bottle. I thought, well, as long as it’s under $40, I’m going home with a bottle. When I saw the price tag, I almost felt guilty how little it cost for the incredible pleasure each sip brings.

As of 2010, Aylés is legally designated as a Vino de Pago, the highest possible government appellation status for a vineyard or estate, of which there are currently fewer than 20 in all of Spain. This designation makes the 2020 Cuesta del Herrero even more of a tremendous value. As I type this, I’m kicking myself for not buying more.
