Affordable, World-Class, 97-99-Point Napa Cabs (Yeah, You Read That Right!)

Honestly, I deliberately avoid using AI for most work related tasks. Sorry Chat GPT, but I guess I’m just old-school and prefer my own thoughts to hit the page—even if they’re grammatically incorrect and not as polished as they could be. Given that tasting wine and trying to communicate what you smell, taste, and feel to other people is one of the most complex, subjective things you could ever try to do, I hope my job is safe at least for the time being! However, when starting to write this article I asked Google what I should expect to pay for high-quality, top scoring Napa Cabernet. The answer was $200 to $4000 per bottle! Well, I thought, we can do better than that. So I decided to write a list of what I consider to be some of the best of the best Napa Valley wines—these all deliver exceptional quality, respected pedigree, cellaring potential, and massive critical acclaim. Then I gave myself a budget not to exceed $100 per bottle, and here’s what I came up with.

2022 Patria "Monarch" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $Hidden (Elsewhere $100) 97DC The first wine I selected has a price too low to show here, so you’ll have to get logged in to Insider’s Advantage to see just how razor sharp it is. Patria is made by iconic winemaker Tony Biagi, a guy credited with being one of the most talented winemakers out there. Tony has many 100-point scores to his name and was recognized by Antonio Galloni as his Winemaker of the Year in 2020. Tony has access to the best fruit in the valley and a longtime relationship with the famed Oakville Ranch that is the backbone of many of these wines. If you're looking for a rich, powerful, decadent, Napa Cab that is polished to perfection, this is a great place to find it. Fruit from sources including Oakville Ranch, Beckstoffer GIII and more. This wine shows the bold, fruit-forward nature of the vintage, but still retains a lovely varietal typicity with a hint of tobacco leaf and camphor alongside all that exotic ripe fruit. Pretty much impossible to beat for this price.

2022 Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $79.95 99DC For fans of a more traditional, elegant, refined style of Napa Cab, look no further than Matthiasson. Steve Matthiasson is first and foremost an exceptional grape grower. Farming several estate vineyards, plus a dozen or more contracts around the valley, Steve is tapped into some fantastic sites all being meticulously farmed for a more balanced, lower-alcohol style. I’m excited to see these wines, which are produced in a more understated style, being rewarded with huge scores. The 2022 is a remarkable fresh wine given the late season heat. Thanks to hands-on control in farming the vineyards Steve without doubt produced one of the wines of the vintage, regardless of its modest price point.

2021 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $69.95 99DC Few wines have more pedigree and proven agability than Heitz Cabernet. Always a bastion of wines “made in the vineyard” and traditional winemaking in the cellar, Heitz continues to be a benchmark for the region. 2021 was an exceptional vintage for the team at Heitz led by longtime winemaker Brittany Sherwood. The moderate temperature, dry, low-yielding growing season produced wines with exceptional concentration and structure. The lack of any significant heat spikes leading up to harvest allowed natural acidities to remain high giving freshness and vitality to the wines. This is a great vintage, for a great producer as evidenced by the 99-point score for their Napa Valley appellated wine.

2021 Paradigm Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon $99.95 97DC Paradigm is one of the most perfectly situated estates in the valley. Sitting in the heart of the western Oakville bench, Paradigm’s neighbors include Opus One’s To Kalon South parcel, Martha’s Vineyard, and Christian Mouiex’s Ulysses Vineyard. A perfect, gentle slope of alluvial gravels off the Mayacamas make this Grade A dirt for growing Cabernet. Next consider that, for decades, the wines have been crafted by none other than Heidi Barrett, formerly the winemaker for icons such as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle Vineyards, Grace Family Vineyards, Amuse Bouche, and more. The guiding principle at Paradigm is capturing this special place in bottle. There’s no $100M winery, or over the top palatial tasting room here. You’re paying for what's in the bottle and nothing more. An absolute gem of a wine that offers true class and sense of place for a very fair price.

2021 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon $Hidden (Elsewhere $180) 98JD 98OB 97DC 97JS 97TWI We have very special pricing on this iconic, historic, Howell Mountain Cab. The price is too low to publish here so you’ll just have to login to Insider’s Advantage and see just how serious the discount is. The wine itself is like a huge, muscular horse coaxed into harmony executing  precise dressage steps by a true master of his craft. Made by Chris Carpenter (Lokoya, Cardinale etc) who has made a career of crafting monumental, mountain-grown Napa Cabernets that are among some of the most impressive wines I’ve tasted in my career. Carpenter has a magic touch whereby he seems to be able to capture the raw power and intensity that Cabernet grown under these conditions brings, but is able to tame the often ferocious tannins, harness power, ripeness and sheer volume, but with ever losing varietal typicity or textural definition. Wines of this scale simply don’t often have this level of detail, nuance and freshness. 2021 is a great vintage of La Jota with a broad drinking window. Enjoy this truly world-class Cab anytime over the next 15-20 years and probably beyond.
