Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda: A Bold Vision in Bolgheri

When Barolo legend Angelo Gaja purchased Ca'Marcanda in 1996, Bolgheri was not yet the internationally recognized appellation it is today. However, Angelo had a vision: to bring his experience from Piedmont to Tuscany’s coastal terroir. Thirty years later, the exceptional Super Tuscan wines of Gaja have become the gold standard by which the region is measured.

The story behind the estate’s name is quite amusing. "Ca’Marcanda," meaning "house of endless negotiations" in Piemontese dialect, reflects the long, stereotypically Italian discussions that were required to secure the property. After two years of persistent negotiation, Angelo convinced the previous owner to sell the estate to him—an effort that has since proven its worth time and time again. Today, Bolgheri is renowned for forever changing both the Italian and international wine markets. There may be no better example than these incredible wines from one of the world’s greatest winemakers. Today I’m taking a deeper dive into what makes this place so special for making wine.

The Bolgheri Terroir: A New Home for Gaja

Bolgheri may be a newer appellation, but it quickly became famous thanks to its maritime climate and diverse soils. The Ca’Marcanda estate, located in Castagneto Carducci, spans approximately 200 acres, with 150 acres planted to vines.

The vineyards of Ca’Marcanda and Bolgheri in general are composed of two distinct soil types:

  • Terre Brune (dark soils) – Rich in lime and clay, these soils provide structure and depth to the wines, making them ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

  • Terre Bianche (white soils) – A stonier composition with limestone and clay, enhancing Cabernet Franc and Syrah grapes with freshness and minerality.

The difference between these two soil types is immediately noticeable when visiting Bolgheri, a place that is truly unique. Gaja recognized early on that Bolgheri’s terroir had the potential to rival some of the world’s greatest wine regions, particularly Bordeaux. The perfect climate, combined with the proximity to the sea, gives Bolgheri a distinct edge—Sassicaia is grown in this area for a reason.

The Wines of Ca’Marcanda

The goal of Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda project is to bring Piemontese expertise to this beautiful region. All the Ca’Marcanda wines are incredibly precise, making them the perfect introduction to the region. They offer a smooth, refined experience that balances the energy of Piedmont with the distinctiveness of Bolgheri.

Here are some standout wines from Ca’Marcanda:

2023 Gaja Ca'Marcanda "Vistamare" Toscana IGT White Blend $74.95 The estate's only white wine, Vistamare is an elegant blend of Vermentino, Viognier, and Fiano—three varieties that thrive in Bolgheri’s Mediterranean climate. The name, meaning "sea view," evokes the breezy freshness and floral aromatics of the wine, balancing ripe stone fruit, citrus, and saline minerality with a textured, layered mouthfeel.

2022 Gaja Ca'Marcanda "Promis" Toscana IGP Rosso $56.99 This entry-level red wine is a blend of Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese. The choice of Toscana IGT over Bolgheri DOC reflects Gaja’s creative freedom, allowing the inclusion of Syrah and Sangiovese, which don’t fit into Bolgheri’s traditional Bordeaux-focused classification. The terre brune soils lend depth, offering juicy blackberry, spice, and herbal undertones, while the freshness of Sangiovese adds vibrancy.

2022 Gaja Ca'Marcanda "Magari" Toscana IGT Rosso $89.99 Magari, meaning "if only" or "perhaps," represents Gaja’s interpretation of a Bordeaux-inspired blend with an Italian soul. Made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, this wine is deeper and more structured than Promis. The use of fruit from both terre brune and terre bianche soils creates a harmonious balance of richness and elegance. Expect dark plum, graphite, and herbal notes, with a long, polished finish. The Cabernet Franc here shines—definitely one of my favorite Cab Franc–dominant wines from Italy.

2017 Gaja Ca'Marcanda "Ca'Marcanda" Bolgheri DOC $129.99

2018 Gaja Ca'Marcanda "Ca'Marcanda" Bolgheri DOC $129.99 The flagship wine of the estate, Ca’Marcanda is a Bolgheri DOC wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant variety. Unlike Promis and Magari, this blend follows the strict Bolgheri classification, emphasizing the structured elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon. Grown in terre bianche soils, Ca’Marcanda is a wine of intensity and finesse, offering layers of blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, and minerality, with a seamless integration of tannins and long aging potential.

Sustainability and Evolution at Ca’Marcanda

Gaja’s approach is constantly evolving, and the wines have continued to improve since the estate’s first vintage. In the mid-2010s, Gaja began refining the winemaking process to adapt to climate change. Some of the key innovations include:

  • Switching from Cordon to Guyot vine training to reduce grape concentration while maintaining freshness.

  • Using a mix of fermentation vessels (oak, stainless steel, and concrete) to refine texture and complexity.

  • Decreasing the use of new oak, allowing the purity of the fruit and terroir expression to shine.

Gaja’s Legacy in Bolgheri

Gaja’s forward-thinking approach, which revolutionized winemaking in Piedmont, has now firmly taken root in Bolgheri. After more than 20 vintages, Ca’Marcanda has established itself as a leading force in the region. Angelo Gaja’s decision to invest in Bolgheri before it gained international acclaim speaks to his visionary persona. After all, Piedmont wouldn’t be the same without him.

I invite you to try the wines of Ca’Marcanda. They’re a fantastic way to introduce yourself to one of the most respected producers in the world—without hurting your wallet too much.
