Let Kirk Be Your Guide to the Exciting World of Portuguese Wine

When you want to champion the wines of an entire country, especially one that has a very deep history of winemaking but is still relatively unknown to the American consumer, it is hard to know where to begin. So, I think the best way to start talking about Portuguese wine is with a quote from the Mugatu from the movie Zoolander: “Portugal… it’s so hot right now….”

So many exciting things are happening in the Portuguese wine world. Over the last 30 years the wine industry has changed so much… in the span of just one generation, Portuguese wine is ready for international success. Winemakers and viticulturalists have so much knowledge now, it is no surprise how good these wines are now. And the best part about it is that we are along for the ride to watch and taste what is happening. It’s a wonderful (and popular) place to visit. Just about everyone I know who has traveled there has reported back their visits were incredible—the country, the people, the food, and the wine! It’s no wonder Portugal is hot right now.

There are a couple of challenges that the region faces. The first challenge, which I consider more of a strength than an obstacle, is the many indigenous grape varieties that can only be found in Portugal. Portugal is in the same situation as the other European wine countries that are not named France and Germany, and to some extent Italy and Spain. All those countries have an amazing resource—local varieties that have adapted to their local conditions for centuries. New flavors! What is more exciting than that?! New styles and traditions? Yet, that also means that it might be harder for consumers to navigate a wine aisle full of unrecognizable grapes on the labels, so Portuguese wines might get overlooked.

The second challenge is the opposite side of that same coin. There is so much to learn, it might feel daunting. Names, not just of varieties, but regions, landscape, and producers. Not to mention all those things being in a language that most of us have no familiarity with. And if you are like me, with no ear for languages, they are challenging to pronounce. But this is our challenge, not that of the wine. We need to be curious and generous with ourselves and the wines.

The final challenge lies with me. Portuguese wines will be new to many of us, with new flavors and maybe an unfamiliar style or two. I’m here to guide you as we jump into this exciting category, and to assure you that the wines are delicious. I’ve picked some of my current in-stock favorites to help you start your Portuguese wine adventure, and I can’t wait to hear what you think once you try them!
