How to Buy 2025 Bordeaux Futures: Formats, Timing & Allocations

2025 Bordeaux is one of the strongest vintages in recent memory, released at prices that may not last. The campaign is winding down, larger formats are going first, and the best allocations are already moving. Here is how to make sure you don't miss it.

The wines of the 2025 vintage have proven to be exceptionally high in quality, making the primary decision less about separating the wheat from the chaff and more about determining which wines you would like to add to your collection. Yields and overall production are down compared to many recent vintages, limiting availability. At the same time, pricing remains competitive—an attractive combination that doesn't come around often. K&L recently traveled to Bordeaux to taste through the wines we offer and maintains strong relationships with the region's top producers and négociants, allowing us to secure a wide range of wines and formats.

Single Bottles or Full Cases in OWC?

One of the first decisions collectors face is whether to purchase single bottles or full cases in their original wooden cases (OWC). While purchasing individual bottles requires a lower upfront investment, it can limit your options down the road. Full cases allow you to follow a wine's evolution over time, opening bottles periodically as it matures rather than relying on only one or two opportunities to experience it. For those considering the investment potential of fine wine, full cases are also generally more desirable and easier to resell.

Which Format Is Right for Your Cellar?

Standard 750ml bottles remain the most common choice and, when purchased in OWC, represent the traditional approach to building a Bordeaux collection. However, larger formats offer distinct advantages. Because the ratio of wine to oxygen is greater, magnums (1.5L) typically age more slowly and are often considered the ideal format for long-term cellaring and optimal drinking experiences. Larger formats such as double magnums (3L) and imperials (6L) are also available and can make excellent additions for favorite estates, special occasions, or as centerpiece bottles within a cellar.

To summarize: 750ml bottles remain the foundation of most collections, particularly when purchased in OWC. Magnums offer exceptional aging potential and are prized by many collectors, while larger formats are best reserved for wines you are especially passionate about or for memorable future celebrations.

What About Tariffs?

One of the strongest reasons to buy 2025 Bordeaux through K&L: our pricing includes any applicable tariffs. No surprise charges at delivery, no uncertainty about what you'll owe in 2028. What you pay today is what you pay.

For context: US tariffs on EU wine currently stand at 10%. When you buy en primeur and hold the wine in bond, the tariff is charged only when the wine leaves bond — not at purchase. The rate that applies is the one in effect at delivery, typically two to three years out. By building tariffs into our pricing now, K&L removes that variable entirely, providing greater transparency and certainty than is often available elsewhere in the market.

When to Act—and How

Now is an excellent time to move. Although the En Primeur campaign has officially concluded, most wines remain available for the coming weeks. This is especially true for standard 750ml formats. If you are interested in larger formats — 3L and above — act as early as possible. These are produced in limited quantities at the time of bottling, and early commitments ensure they can be filled specifically for your order.

Orders can be placed through our website or with assistance from our Customer Service team. Requests for wines subject to allocation can be communicated at that time as well. As the wines continue to mature in barrel, delivery is not expected until the fall of 2028.

Ready to Build Your Cellar?

The hardest part of 2025 isn't finding a great wine—it's deciding how many cases to buy. The vintage delivers across every appellation and every price point, from under-$50 values to First Growth icons, and the window to secure the best allocations is narrowing.
