Giuseppe Quintarelli – A Legacy Bottled in Time
The name Giuseppe Quintarelli resonates across the Italian wine world as a master of the Valpolicella region. People discuss Quintarelli as if it were more than a winery; Quintarelli represents the devotion of a family to each other, alongside a relentless pursuit of perfection in winemaking.
During the last hundred years the Quintarelli family has established its reputation through their estate located on the eastern slope of the Negrar Valley in the middle of Valpolicella. Silvio Quintarelli established the winery in 1924. It was his son, Giuseppe, also known as Bepi, however, who helped the winery achieve worldwide recognition. The winery has maintained its dedication to traditional methods and patient winemaking since Silvio’s era, but Bepi’s influence is incalculable. His manual label writing became an unmistakable signature for the brand, showing what a labor of love each and every bottle is. Combined with his use of ten-year Slavonian-oak barrel aging, Bepi developed a signature Amarone style that established itself as the reference point for many Italian winemakers.
The current management of the winery rests equally on the shoulders of Fiorenza, together with her husband, Giampaolo, and their sons Francesco and Lorenzo. Bepi's legacy lives on as they maintain his principles. The vineyards span 12 hectares across volcanic and limestone soils and remain chemical-free while producing limited yields to protect the land and its fruit quality.
The grapes undergo appassimento; this traditional drying process allows winemakers to extract concentrated elegant flavor from their fruit. The drying process of Amarone grapes leads to extended fermentation times and multiple years of oak barrel aging, amounting to eight to ten years before bottling. The Valpolicella produced at the winery undergoes a ripasso fermentation process using Amarone lees to achieve exceptional structure and depth that is uncommon in its category.
The unique aspect of Quintarelli stands in their practice of releasing wines only after they have reached full readiness and meet their quality criteria. They choose to release their wines only when they achieve the desired perfection level. In difficult vintages the winemakers choose to abstain from making Amarone. Such self-control has nearly disappeared from the contemporary wine industry. The Quinterelli mindset values purity without any commercial elements.
