Champagnes and White Wines to Steal the Holiday Show
As the holiday season swiftly approaches, a familiar anxiety emerges: what should you bring as a beverage to all these gatherings? How do you unite with close friends and family, who may or may not appreciate your "best stuff," while still feeling thrilled to uncork a bottle? Fortunately, after wrestling with this conundrum for over a decade, I know how to find the sweet spots. The following Champagne and white wine icons will pique the interest of your wine-savvy company, won't completely break the bank (with one notable, bank-break worthy exception), and will add an extra layer of heartwarming flavor to the holiday experience.
When it comes to Champagne, people often justifiably gravitate towards Cristal and Dom Perignon when they want to impress. We have plenty of fantastic vintages available. For those wanting to go an extra mile by bringing something classy but less recognizable, the 2008 Taittinger "Comtes de Champagne" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne $269.99 100JS 98DC 98WA 98VN 97JG 97WE 95WS is the perfect choice. This superb JS100 masterpiece has been hailed as "the perfect Blanc de Blancs," among other compliments.
The newly arrived Krug "Grande Cuvée" 172ème Édition Brut Champagne $259.99 97DC 97JS 95VN, based on the 2016 vintage, has already earned up to 97 points from Decanter, and is an excellent choice for the occasion. This artistic blend of 146 different wines, with the oldest dating back to 1998, embodies all the qualities we love about Krug—class and elegance, paired with precision and depth, certain to impress from novice to expert.
While I hadn't initially planned to select four white wines, I found I could not cross one off the list to recommend, since they all fit a different niche place on the holiday docket.
Although some might not think to place Sancerre or the Loire Valley among the world's finest wines, the Cotat cousins (along with Dagueneau and a few others) are here to challenge that perception. The 2023 Domaine Pascal Cotat "Les Monts Damnés" Sancerre $99.99 perfectly expresses the chalk, limestone, and clay soils that resemble more the terroir of Chablis than the rest of the Loire Valley. The cousins are renowned for infusing their Sauvignon Blancs with a Burgundian-like texture, laser-sharp minerality, and a complexity that ranks them among the world's most striking white wines in my book.
Sancerre as a top choice may have raised an eyebrow, but this recommendation will raise both. Cantina Terlano in Alto Adige is crafting some seriously eye-catching white wines, and the 2021 Cantina Terlano "Vorberg" Pinot Bianco Riserva Alto Adige $56.99 99JS 95WE is a star for this time of year when you want texture with balance, without compromising any sense of lift or breadth. Suckling's 99-point rating bolsters our case, with him describing the initial impression as "impressively vibrant, almost electric," and declaring, "This is incredible."
Finally, for whites, we're fortunate to offer four bottles of the 2016 Domaine Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru $4,999.99 98JG 97WA 96BH 96VN. John Gilman called it "pure magic," a sentiment you can only truly understand through experience. It is true that wines of this tier can seem intimidating to some but a no-brainer to others; to become the latter, one must take the leap into the world’s supreme white wines–Grand Cru White Burgundy from Coche Dury.
Whether you're visiting friends who are beginners or connoisseurs, this list offers bottles to proudly present, and something that any level of wine enthusiast can enjoy.
