Remarkable Aged In-Stock Bordeaux

Our Redwood City team with Hélène Garcin-Lévêque, winemaker of Barde-Haut from St-Emilion. We have the 2005 in stock, and it shows all the expressive fruit that is hallmark to its excellent vintage.

One of our core beliefs that will not change is that you should be able to walk into K&L any day and find a perfectly aged Bordeaux direct wine at a reasonable price. The wines we’re featuring today speak volumes to this, with perfectly mature examples, including an epic 75-year-old Cantemerle with ideal provenance.

For those who have been around K&L, Coufran is a familiar name, but the 2009 vintage at under $25 is a bit of a unicorn these days. Still delivering at this stage, it remains a consistent bestseller that keeps our clients coming back time and again. Verdignan is another reliable name from Haut-Médoc that we frequently return to, and their 2005 vintage showcases the focus and depth of the year with a perfectly mature expression.

Next are two wines that Clyde has always favored for distinctly different reasons. Barde-Haut is a value champion that has been well represented in our inventory because it consistently offers a remarkable experience for a reasonable price. While I’m a big fan of the 2015, this 2005 demonstrates where that wine will eventually arrive, with a balance of bold fruit and more nuanced, tertiary characteristics. Angludet, on the other hand, is a hidden gem that we don’t see too often. After being pulled from mainstream distribution for several years, we seize the opportunity to acquire it whenever possible, especially as one of Clyde’s favorites. The 2010 vintage reflects the magnificence of a great, age-worthy year while embodying the classic, old-school Margaux profile.

For some unforgettable aged selections, the 1982 Haut-Batailley and the 1996 Gruaud-Larose offer wonderful expressions of Left Bank terroir from two transcendent vintages. The 2001 vintage may not be as heralded, but it has quietly emerged as one of the great sleepers in Bordeaux, as evidenced by Léoville-Las-Cases’ tremendous ’01. Lastly, while it’s not new to us, our stock of the 1949 Cantemerle (Mähler-Besse) is likely our last chance to acquire this historical wine, which has become a reference-point bottling over the past 75 years.
