Spanish Standouts Under $20
Spain offers some of the best wine values in the world because it combines ideal growing conditions with deep-rooted tradition and relatively low production costs. Much of the country, especially regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Aragón, has abundant sunshine, varied elevations, and old vines that produce wines of great concentration and complexity. Land prices and labor costs have historically been lower than in comparable French or Italian regions, allowing producers to offer high-quality wines at more accessible prices. Additionally, many family-owned wineries focus on long-term reputation rather than short-term pricing trends. As global demand for Spanish wine continues to grow, it remains one of the smartest categories for buyers seeking value. Below are my top selections for wines that truly overdeliver for their price.
NV CVNE Brut Cava Penedès $11.99 CVNE acquired the historic Roger Goulart Cava house in 2017, and, in their hands, this is a supremely classic and drinkable style of everyday Cava made from the three classic indigenous grapes: Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo.
NV Primitivo Collantes "Ceballos" Fino Chiclana de la Frontera Jerez 375ml $13.99 Fino sherry doesn’t get more quintessential than this. Bone dry, salty and incredibly racy, this is the perfect bottle to keep chilled in the refrigerator.
2023 Vinos del Viento Garnacha Blanca Campo de Borja $12.99 (Previously $18) From old vines planted in Aragon’s Campo de Borja region, this wine has the weight and texture to pair with food, without feeling overly heavy or oily on the palate.
2023 Adegas Valtea Albariño Rias Baixas $17.99 A longstanding K&L customer favorite, this Albariño is sourced from the warmer, more inland area of Rias Baixas, so it’s bursting with citrus fruit aromas, as well as faint melon and peach, all tied up with racy acidity.
2019 Bodegas Casa Juan "Señor de Lesmos" Crianza Rioja $12.99 An absolute workhorse of a weeknight wine, the Lesmos Crianza has just a touch of oak and is the perfect pairing for pizza, pasta, roast chicken and more. There’s a reason why we’ve directly imported this wine for over a decade!
2024 Bodegas Torremoron Ribera del Duero $17.99 Sourced from old-vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) this is a “no-makeup” version of Ribera del Duero, with no new oak to hide the luscious, structured red fruit intensity the region is famous for.
2023 Bodegas Lleiroso "Luz Millar" Ribera del Duero Roble $19.99 I loved this wine at first sip! A roble is a wine that is aged briefly in oak (about 3-9 months) before release. It’s less aged than a Crianza, but just enough to amplify the more savory aromas and increase tannin structure.
2023 Vinos del Viento "Aventura" Campo de Borja $10.99 (Previously $15) Made from a somewhat unlikely blend of Garnacha, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon, all fermented in concrete, this is juicy and approachable–almost reminiscent of a Beaujolais Village in structure and feel.
2020 Bodegas Sierra Salinas "Mira Salinas" Monastrell Alicante $14.99 93JS If Garnacha and Tempranillo are firmly red-fruited, Monastrell (Mourvèdre) is the black-fruited alternative, known for wild blackberry and black plum notes. This is such a great example of the variety, sourced from old-vine plots.
2024 Vera de Estenas Bobal Utiel-Requena $14.99 Athough widely planted in Spain, Bobal is still an under-the-radar variety. Native to Utiel-Requena region, it offers intense fruity and earthy flavors. This is made in a wonderfully soft and supple style. Try it with a slight chill.
2020 Sedella "Laderas de Sedella Anfora" Sierras de Malaga $17.99 From the mountains north of the southern city of Malaga, this is a 100-year-old-plus field blend of Romé, Jaén, and Garnacha, fermented and aged in concrete eggs and clay amphorae. Wild and herbaceous, this wine has incredible texture!
