Irresistible Rhône: Wines of Character, Depth, and Value

Keith Mabry, K&L Rhône Wine Buyer

The Rhône Valley embodies so much of what we love about wine. Are you looking for something that is both accessible and delicious? How about a fun and dynamic white wine that consistently overdelivers? Perhaps you seek a special bottle to age gracefully in the cellar, or a wine to build a meal around? The Rhône has an answer for all of the above—and more.

Today, we are featuring a one-of-a-kind library opportunity from Xavier Vignon. Next is a relatively new addition to the K&L scene that has quickly become one of our cherished go-to producers: Gigognan. We’ve been working with the wines from Remizières for a bit longer, but they continue to amaze year after year. A quick check-in with Mas de Libian rounds out the set, highlighting an under-the-radar producer that is about to receive the spotlight it deserves.

Xavier Vignon's Unique Vision for the Rhône Valley

Xavier Vignon is one of our favorite winemakers in the Rhône. He’s a well-known winemaking consultant who works with other producers around France; but when he sets his skills on his own wine projects, the results are dazzling. While we're always thrilled with his portfolio top to bottom, today we're highlighting his rare and extraordinary library Châteaneuf releases. Mas de Libian's Biodynamic Reds from the Southern Rhône

Despite being a historic property, Mas de Libian remains somewhat under the radar. However, they check many boxes for us. They have long practiced organic farming and are now Demeter-certified biodynamic. Their wines are fresh, vibrant, accessible, quaffable, sumptuous, and compelling. The property’s terroir closely resembles that of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, featuring calcareous, iron-rich clay soils and galets roulés (rolled stones) that sit on the surface, radiating warmth back to the vines. With all these advantages, it’s hard to believe that none of their delicious wines retail for more than $30! Click here to read more about Mas de Libian and how they've finally found the spotlight.
